India 2020 and The Kerala Model

The other day I happened to browse a case study by Bill McKibben on "The Kerala Model". You can refer the the article @http://www.ashanet.org/library/articles/kerala.199803.html . I followed up another article on the same @http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerala_model . The article highlights are as follows:
  1. Kerala is the only place in the world to be declared ‘baby-friendly’ by the WHO and the UNICEF.
  2. The indicators of material well-being in Kerala are far closer to that of the US than those of the rest of India and the developing world.
  3. Kerala is ranked 1st among Indian states in the Human Development Index [India is ranked 126th overall].
  4. Kerala's official literacy rate above 96 per cent.
  5. In Kerala the birth rate is 40 per cent below that of the national average and almost 60 per cent below the rate for poor countries in general.

The article briefs about how kerala has achieved such high social standards, standards that are at par with developed countries with relatively less industrial development. Most of us know that the industrial development which is the wealth of our states is far less in kerala compared to many other indian states. The achievement is mainly due to the policies followed by the past governments in the state. There are some side effects of these policies too. Most of us know that the greatest challenge for our country is education. It would be most desirable for other states to achieve what kerala has achieved in the past. What we need to do is closely scrutinize the model and try to replicate in other states without any side effects on industrial growth. I believe that this will accelerate the development of our country. With the rest of the states having replicated the states achievements, we might probably be closer to the vision "India 2020" by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam our former president. So people where do you think we need to start?

phoenix,

nice topic.the kerala model was a new thing that i came across. i think the other states should start by replicating the education initiatives by the government in kerala. thats what kerala has been known for a long time. we should make education compulsory till a bachelors level. i think the government should also start running state funded mobile literacy programs for a period of time to educate the illiterates. then only they will send their children to school and realize the importance of educating their children. these are the two steps that i can think of...btw my name is ishant

i think we should have a look at the policies and programs followed by the government of kerala instead of suggesting to make policies like compulsory education and stuff. I dont know how many of the poor can afford such a government rule/policy. Then it should be run by the state govt. Its not possible for other governments of states to support a compulsory education programme for all people. we would have been already developed if we had tat kind of money.:) So we should look at the already tested and proved method by the kerala govt which can be afforded by other states (bcoz poor kerala could even afford it :)). Please have a look at the history of initiatives by the kerala govt @ http://www.kerala.gov.in/education/liter.htm
